Biodiversity Atlas
The Action for Adaptation biodiversity atlas is a peer-reviewed online platform developed by researchers and mapping experts.
The purpose of Action for Adaptation biodiversity atlas is to develop mapping to meet the needs of local governments and First Nations on BC’s southwest coast to enable planners to identify important areas for biodiversity and ecological importance, and support actions for climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation.
Using existing Provincial and other data sources as well as LiDAR and satellite imagery, our mappers have developed high resolution and updated mapping for southwest BC. Our ecosystem mapping has revealed far more sensitive ecosystems on the landscape than existing Provincial data shows. Our forest mapping reveals locations of big tree mature and old growth forests. We hope this data will aid in more informed decisions that conserve the last remaining sensitive ecosystems in southwest BC’s highly fragmented landscape.
List of Mapping Layers developed for the Action for Adaptation project:
• Land Cover (LiDAR & satellite; 3m)
• Forest Carbon (LiDAR & satellite; 15m)
• Tree Canopy (LiDAR & satellite; 15m)
• Disturbance
• Sensitive Ecosystems (new high resolution old and big-tree forest; riparian)
• Potential Ecosystems at Risk
• Climate Microrefugia
• Hydrologically Sensitive Areas
• Species at Risk habitat (from the Nature Conservancy of Canada)
• Ecosystem Connectivity (possibly in late 2026)
