What is the Action for Adaptation project?
The Action for Adaptation website provides local government and First Nations planners and decision-makers with mapping and planning tools to support actions for climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation in southwest BC.
We started with conversations with First Nations and local government planners, mappers, community groups, consultants and researchers. They identified a need for updated, high resolution mapping for local planning and highlighted gaps in knowledge about policy tools in order to plan for climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.
This website aims to meet these needs, fill gaps, and help people take action.
Our Goals
We aim to provide tools that will help with informed planning for ecosystem and climate resilience.
In southwest BC, around half of our ecosystems have been permanently lost, and what remains is at risk.
Protecting, restoring, and managing what’s left is not only ecologically urgent — it’s a powerful climate strategy.
Nature-based solutions (NbS) such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands act as natural carbon sinks and can address 30–40% of CO₂ emissions by 2030 (UNEP), offering one of the most cost-effective tools available for limiting global warming.
Action for Adaptation Toolbox
The Action for Adaptation Toolbox includes:
Biodiversity Atlas – includes mapping layers that local government and First Nations planners have indicated are missing at a high resolution.
Project Team
Action for Adaptation is a collaboration between the UBC Botanical Garden and the Coastal Douglas Fir Conservation Partnership (CDFCP).
Our dedicated team is committed to supporting our community conserve valuable ecosystems and adapt to climate change.
Project Funders
We would like to thank each of our sponsors for the funding and encouragement you have provided
Land Acknowledgment
We respectfully acknowledge that the project area of the Action for Adaptation project is located in the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish people of southwest BC.
The UBC Botanical Garden is situated on the the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people.
We are grateful to the original caretakers of these lands for their continued stewardship, and strive to honour this relationship through our work.
